☕ Coffee Brewing Calculator
Get precise ratios for your perfect cup
How to Use This Tool
Follow these simple steps to get your custom coffee brew recipe:
- Select your preferred brew method from the dropdown menu. Each option includes the standard coffee-to-water ratio for that method.
- Enter the number of servings you want to make (1-20 servings maximum).
- Set your serving size: enter the volume per cup and select milliliters or fluid ounces.
- Choose whether you want coffee measurements in grams or tablespoons.
- Click the "Calculate Brew" button to generate your full recipe.
- Use the "Reset" button to clear all inputs and start over, or "Copy Results" to save your recipe to your clipboard.
Formula and Logic
This calculator uses standard specialty coffee industry ratios for each brew method, which are widely accepted by home baristas and coffee professionals:
- Drip Coffee: 1:15 (1 gram coffee per 15 grams water, approx 1ml water = 1 gram)
- French Press: 1:12
- Pour Over: 1:16
- Espresso: 1:2
- Cold Brew: 1:8
- AeroPress: 1:14
To calculate total coffee needed: (Total water volume in ml) / (Ratio) = Coffee in grams. For tablespoon measurements, we use an approximate conversion of 5 grams per tablespoon of medium-ground coffee.
Serving sizes are converted between milliliters and fluid ounces using the standard factor: 1 fluid ounce = 29.5735 milliliters.
Practical Notes
Adjust these recipes to fit your personal taste and real-world home brewing constraints:
- If your coffee tastes too bitter, use a coarser grind or reduce the coffee amount by 10%. If it tastes too sour, use a finer grind or increase coffee by 10%.
- For cold brew, you can store the concentrate in the fridge for up to 1 week. Dilute with water or milk before serving.
- 1 tablespoon of ground coffee is approximately 5 grams, but this can vary slightly by bean density and grind size.
- Espresso ratios are for a single shot (approx 30ml output). Double shots use 2:4 ratio, which is the same 1:2 ratio.
- Most standard coffee mugs hold 240-350ml (8-12 oz), so adjust serving sizes to match your favorite mug.
Why This Tool Is Useful
Home coffee brewing often leads to inconsistent results from guessing measurements. This tool eliminates guesswork for:
- Daily coffee drinkers who want a reliable morning cup without measuring every time.
- Home baristas testing new brew methods or scaling recipes for guests.
- People managing household grocery budgets by calculating exact coffee needed for the week.
- Anyone avoiding bitter or weak coffee by using precise, tested ratios.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if I don't have a scale to measure coffee in grams?
You can use the tablespoon measurement option. The calculator uses an approximate 5 grams per tablespoon conversion, which works for most medium-ground coffee. For more precision, a basic kitchen scale is affordable and improves consistency.
Can I use these ratios for decaf coffee?
Yes, decaf coffee has the same density and brew properties as regular coffee, so the same ratios apply. Adjust to taste as you would with caffeinated beans.
How do I adjust the recipe for iced coffee?
For iced coffee, brew hot coffee using your preferred method, then pour over ice. Use a slightly stronger ratio (reduce the ratio number by 1-2, e.g. 1:14 instead of 1:15 for drip) to account for ice melting and diluting the flavor.
Additional Guidance
For best results, use freshly roasted beans ground within 2 weeks of use. Pre-ground coffee loses flavor quickly, so grind beans just before brewing if possible.
Water quality matters: use filtered water free of strong odors or chlorine, as coffee is 98% water and off-flavors will come through in the brew.
Clean your brew equipment regularly to avoid old coffee oils building up, which can make future batches taste bitter or rancid.
